Trapped moisture can lead to staining, odor, mold, and another failed repair.

Sagging, soft, crumbling, or delaminated drywall normally needs removal rather than another coat of compound.

A replacement piece needs dependable backing or framing on every unsupported edge.

The patch should sit flush with the surrounding ceiling before tape and compound are applied.

After the repair is dry and finished, use an appropriate stain-blocking primer so discoloration does not bleed through.
